Applegate was a highly successful actress and producer in film and television. She won an Primetime Emmy Award, seven nominations, and nominated for four Golden Globe Awards as well as an Tony Award. Applegate was the lead actress in the title role in the NBC sitcom Jesse (1998-2000) and for which she was nominated to win the Golden Globe Award. She also won a Primetime Emmy Award for her part as a guest on the NBC sitcom Friends (2002-2003). She was nominated for the Tony Award as Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in Sweet Charity (2005). Samantha Who?, an ABC sitcom that she played her final time on. Later, she starred on ABC's sitcom Samantha Who (2007-2009) and for which she received two Primetime Emmy Awards , as well as the Golden Globe Award; the NBC sitcom Up All Night (2012); and the Netflix drama series Dead to Me (2019-2022) where she received three Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
